Working working
// July 2nd, 2009 // Karp-thoughts, Life, Wordpress
I think I’ve given up trying to get mail posting to work. I think it may be my host that just doesn’t support it. Which is a bit weird, and no, I’m not sure that actually is the case, but anyway. I can’t be bothered just now. I don’t need it that much. I’ll just write my posts in word if I feel the need to write something at work, and then log in quickly to copypasta it. It’s not that WP is blocked you see, it’s just that I don’t want to look like I’m all surf surf surf and no work.
So anyway, speaking of work. It’s nice to have a job where I’m actually doing somehting work related all day, instead of… you know, playing flash games and reading gossip. Even though I haven’t actually started working for real yet, I do have things to do all the time. There’s training documents to read, people to ask about things, observations and lots of other things. And on Monday my official induction and training starts, which I’m really looking forward to since I’m hoping everything will make a bit more sense once I’m through with it. I do understand the basics already, but there’s so many details and products and processes to learn. It’s unbelievable.Had a good meeting with my boss today that was quite reassuring. It made me feel like it wasn’t so bad to not understand, and made me worry less about the time it’ll take to grasp everything. Se said it usually takes a new employee about six months to get fully up to speed with everything that we do. Whew!
So all is well. I’m a bit nackered when I get home in the afternoons, but I think that’s just cause everything is new. And I’m not tired in the same way that I was when I was at my old job. There I was sort of sick-tired and I think that’s cause I had so much down-time and wasn’t actually doing anything at all. Now I’m tired because I’ve been doing things, I’ve been thinking and working and it feels a lot better. I am gonna od on coffee though. The machine coffee is free and it’s brilliant. I’ve never tasted machine coffee that fine before, not even in the IBM-machine where the coffee was 85p! Seriously, I’m amazed.
My colleagues are great as well, I’m getting along well with all of them. They’re all very helpful and generally nice.
In fact, I don’t think I have a single complaint yet, apart from the fact that they want me to start at 8am, but even that isn’t so bad. Especially since I think I’ve managed to arrange to car-pool with one of the girls on the team who also live on the south side. This is once we move there ofc, but it’s not far off now. I can’t wait! Everything got sorted with BT and Virgin in the end, although the internet will probably be down for a few days while the router and modem and stuff gets posted to us. Pff! But oh well, I guess we can use that time to decorate and stuff. ^^
What else? I’m proofreading the summary for mum’s PhD thesis, and I should get to finishing that now, before I go to bed. I’m away all weekend and I don’t want to bring my laptop, so I’m going to try to get it done tonight.
Stay tuned tomorrow for another baffling Carp of the Week!

You’re mom’s doing a PhD? That’s so cool! What’s it about? :)
OH GOD THAT TYPO IS MY NUMBER ONE PET PEEVE AND I JUST MADE IT MYSELF! NOO!
Haha, typo!
It’s about um…. home help services and the introduction of IT (hand held computers) in order to monitor the time spent doing the various tasks that they carry out during the day. And that then leads to a discussion about control and relations of power in an employee-employer relationship.
Very interesting, but very difficult to explain. :D
ooh, that sounds interesting though! I worked in home help services for a summer, and I could never figure out the whole time management thing.. I never got it through my head that coffee-breaks with cake and chats was actually a part of the job :)
This was on a small island though, I’m sure there’s no such thing as chatting over cake and coffee in a large city.. I’ve heard horror stories.
Haha, no. It’s quite nice. I think though that they’re trying to cut down on that kind of time. Which is sad, I think. Social interaction is really important to some of the people receiving home help. They might not be able to get in elsewhere.
