NaNoWriMo – Write a novel this month!

For those of you that’s been following me on Twitter or G+, you probably know that I’m participating in NaNoWriMo – National Novel Writing Month – this year. Basically, what that means is that I’m attempting to write (at least) 50,000 words of fiction during the month of November. Quite a task, especially for someone that isn’t in the practice of writing every day, like me.

So why am I not writing yet? Don’t worry, I’ve not started procrastinating on the first day of the challenge. Due to other commitments I’m not able to start until later this evening, and I’ve promised myself to start big. I’m going to the first Glasgow write-in, armed with my laptop and lots and lots of good writing music.

I have a good idea of what my story is going to be about. It’s something that’s been brewing for quite a while. I have a fairly detailed outline for the first half of it (maybe a bit more), and a less detailed one for the second half, which I’m hoping will be enough to get to the big 50k. I’m not ready to write too much about the story yet, so you will have to wait and see for a while more.

To write and plan my story, I’m using Scrivener, a wonderful tool for anyone that’s in the writing business. It’s just about to be released for Windows and they have set up an extended trial for NaNo participants (both Windows and OSX) which can be found here:

I’ll be fairly active on Twitter – @karpsy, as well as on G+. Feel free to give me a nudge any time, although I may not answer right away if I’m in a writing frenzy (desirable).

Happy November everyone!

Scrivener finally available for Windows

Have you, like me, been drooling over the absolutely fantastic-looking software for writing and managing writing projects that is Scrivener? And felt very, very sad that it’s only available for Mac. Well cry no more, cause in July it’s coming to PC.

An open beta is already available to download on their website (for Windows and Linux), and it’s looking very promising. Since it’s still in beta, there are a few bugs and hiccups still, but what’s there looks very promising and just as wonderfully useful as the Mac version.
